Notes Photographer from Arlington, WA. Beginning in the 1920s this high-school-principal-turned-postcard-photographer traveled the state (often through Snoqualmie Pass) taking thousands of pictures of landmarks, scenery and main streets.

From The Arlington Times: J. Boyd Ellis passed away May 1, 1983, at Cascade Valley Hospital. He was born July 25, 1894 in Perry, Iowa and moved with his parents as a young boy to Olympia. He went to what is now Western Washington University and the University of Washington. On finishing at the UW, he became the principal of Marysville High School. His interests turned to photography and he purchased a photo studio in Arlington in 1921. He soon started publishing scenic post cards for distribution throughout the state of Washington, a firm which is now called Ellis Post Card Co. He married Hazel Duxbury, Feb. 16, 1918, she passed away March 24, 1955. He later married Ellaine R. Webb on Sept. 4, 1956. She passed away May 2, 1980. He is survived by a daughter, Amy Joyce Porter of Seattle; a son, Clifford B. Ellis of Arlington; several grand children and great-grandchildren. He was very active in volunteer community affairs, being chairman of the North Snohomish County Ration Board during World War II, is a past president and charter member of Arlington Kiwanis Club, served on the Arlington City Council for several years which ended with a term as Mayor of Arlington. He retired from business in 1959 and enjoyed traveling until he and Ellaine moved to Madison House in Edmonds. He returned to Arlington a year ago.

From Vintage Pacific Northwest: J.Boyd Ellis, former principal of Marysville High School, turned his interest toward photography in 1921, buying a photography studio in Arlington. He (and later his son, Clifford) crisscrossed Washington State for decades, snapping some incredibly beautiful photos of mountains, forests, cities, rivers and beaches and selling them as postcards. Mr. Ellis passed away in 1983 at the age of 89, leaving a legacy of thousands of historic photos of the state in postcard form, including some of the best pre-eruption photos of Mount St. Helens.
